During our first rankings, it was Satoshi Tsumabuki who ruled! Aside from winning Best Actor at the Japan Academy for Villain, Tsumabuki dominated the casting buzz - with back to back roles, including lead roles for My Back Page (with Kenichi Matsuyama), Smuggler and Fly With the Gold. A year later, it was Ryuhei Matsuda's turn  - he also won Best Actor and had a string of amazing films. On our third year, it was Shota Sometani who dominated the rankings.

Sometani went on to top the rankings 2 years in a row, with Yuya Yagira closing in at 2nd place... This year is very different!

Through the years I have been asked to make recommendations on a "verified, authentic list" of Japanese films that one may want to see, as a way of introduction. Many times, I failed to come up with such a list because I don't think I have seen enough. I'm celebrating five years of blogging Japanese movies this coming March 2017 and I thought it would be nice to restart my ambitious 100 contemporary Japanese movie list.

Shotaro Mamiya, Shuhei Nomura and this year's top-ranked actor Kento Yamazaki were previously from the Most Promising list, but a lot can change in a year - Mamiya in particular, was impressive in Litchi Hikari Club (same case with Nomura). Their co-star Yuki Furukawa also entered the top 15, with an intense, sensual albeit sarcastic performance as Zera in the live action adaptation of the controversial youth club.

I often can be quite 'wordy' but this time, I think the photos and brief description above are more than enough. We can probably have the 'wordiness' below and discuss! So, what do you think?
