Don’t be fooled by the fragile, sweet young girl look because Hana Sugisaki can play rough, sensual roles filled with angst and desperation. I first saw Sugisaki in Mysterious Transfer Student (Nazo no Tenkosei) followed closely by a smaller yet high-impact role in MOZU and then in Gakko no Kaidan, but it was in Kaseki no Hohoemi and Pieta in the Toilet that Sugisaki soars in yet undetermined but amazing acting heights.
Perhaps fans of the 17-year old young talent may only worry about her current agency, Ken-On – known for heavily promoting Sota Fukushi to desperate heights, while the likes of Mirai Shida and perhaps Sugisaki herself are subjected to casting waiting games.
In Kaseki no Hohoemi, Sugisaki was praised for her on-screen chemistry with Yuta Koseki in this tale of love, loss, family and the search for self-identity. But you may yet find yourself in awe as she shines once again in her latest work – Pieta in the Toilet.
Christopher Bourne over at Twitch has nothing but praises for Sugisaki:
Sugisaki Hana, another new actor in her first lead role, is stunning as the feisty schoolgirl whose tough exterior masks a frightened, vulnerable soul [ source ]
Her role is challenging, to say the least:
Mai (Hana Sugisaki) is a spunky, pugnacious girl, made that way by her bad home life, which we are privy to in scenes which alternate with Hiroshi’s. She’s forced to essentially be the head of her household, cooking for her constantly working mother and caring for her senile grandmother; no father seems to be in the picture. Mai sometimes gets rather flirtatious in her interactions with Hiroshi, while cheekily reminding him that she’s underage. This, along with her introductory encounter with the older man, may be a hint at how Mai earns her spending money. [ source ]
I’d love to see more of Sugisaki and perhaps my wish to see her in quality projects may happen in Yu o Wakasu Hodo no Atsui Ai, where she plays the daughter of award-winning actress Rie Miyazawa.
