The Battle for the next Top Japanese Dramatic Actress: Yuina Kuroshima, Fumika Shimizu, Mizuki Yamamoto [ Part 4 of 6 Parts ]

It’s not only the men who suffer from “second lead syndrome.” In fact, this ‘acting phenomenon’ is also prevalent among the females. A good example is the Rurouni Kenshin casting where #deadfisheyes Emi Takei takes top billing over the more talented and more appealing Yu Aoi. The current industry practice of mixing idols with pure acting talents is also one major factor why looks take over talent in many movie productions.

Before our final part (where the remaining top contenders are discussed), we take a look at some outstanding young actresses who suffered from this casting syndrome.

I saw Yuina Kuroshima in a CM for telephone giant DocoMo, and she has all the attributes of a star. Her supporting role in Aoi Honoo (headlined by Yuya Yagira) has explored her comedic talents as well. Co-star Mizuki Yamamoto also made some lasting impressions in that series. If you have seen Black Butler (featuring the comeback of Hiro Mizushima ) then you may remember Yamamoto as the maid turned gun-totting sidekick. In Tokyo Refugees, Yamamoto proved she can also play dark, sinister characters. I’m also anticipating good performance from Kuroshima via Ashita ni Nareba.

Kuroshima was the lead in The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki o Kakeru Shojo) short drama series, and I often wonder why it was Kasumi Arimura who gets the high-profile roles when it should be Kuroshima, who is more talented by hundreds of miles.

Perhaps not as well-recognized as Kuroshima and Yamamoto is Fumika Shimizu. At this very early stage, I can say she has a lot of potentials. Not only is she giving Tao Tsuchiya some incredible acting showdowns, but she is also a former gravure idol and model – which makes her more versatile, and can take on those favorite rom-com parts. If they want someone with lots of sex appeal and capable of dominating both the silver and small screens, then my bet is on Shimizu.

Her casting in Tokyo Ghoul is, perhaps. her biggest to date:

The manga’s author Ishida was full of praise for the actors and revealed that he became impressed with Kubota when he was in the midst of work and happened to see a CM then, At that time, he was surprised by Kubota’s acting skills and felt that he would be like Kaneki if the character did exist in the real world. Although he thinks that many people would have already known about Kubota’s acting prowess, Ishida feels that more people would come to know about his strengths through this movie. As for Shimizu, she was chosen at the recommendation of Ishida who revealed that he made a rather tough demand on her before the offer was made officially but she still accepted the challenge. As such, Ishida realized how high her willpower is and thought that she is a good match for Touka’s role. [ read more ]
