Peter Debruge, the Chief Film Critic at Variety explained the process of selecting the nominees, which is different from the standard voting process for other awards at the Oscars. He said:

Unlike, say, the best picture race, in which voters pick their favorites from memory, selecting from among several hundred qualifying films released in Los Angeles theaters that year, the animated feature category tops out at around 20 eligible films, all of which are screened for the nominating committee. In order for their votes to count, each member must see AND RATE at least two-thirds of the qualifying films. The Academy recognition has been the best possible boost for business, raising the profile of these micro-releases far more than the company’s limited marketing budget ever could. FUNimation, posted the upcoming release of the anime on their blog:

We’re excited to announce today that we will be releasing Your Name (Kimi no Na wa), the newest gorgeously animated film from prestigious director Makoto Shinkai, in theaters and on home video. If you’re not familiar with Director Shinkai’s work, you need to be—Variety named him one of the top 10 “animators to watch” for 2016 (and the only Japanese director on that list), and also listed him as one of the top anime directors after Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement, along with Boy and the Beast director Mamoru Hosoda. [ source ]

Heavy contenders on the list include Kubo and the Two Strings, The Red Turtle, Finding Dory, Zootopia, and Trolls.

Animation Alley pins its hope on Kubo, placing ‘Your Name’ at #7:

Laika has perhaps the best reputation of all the studios here. The industry has shown enormous support for Laika’s stop-motion brilliance, awarding them consecutive Oscar nominations for every single one of their films, and even nominating “The Boxtrolls” at the expense of “The Lego Movie.” With their being said, their newest film, “Kubo and the Two Strings,” is virtually a shoo-in given how it’s been hailed as Laika’s best film yet.
