Casting News + Scoop! [Oct 19-26] What’s up with Satoh Takeru, Yamazaki Kento, Suda Masaki, Yoshizawa Ryo and Kamiki Ryunosuke? + Spotlight on Taiga, Suga Kenta, and Yamada Ryosuke!

Give or take, we have 8 of the hottest young actors around in this edition of our casting news and scoop! [in no particular order] Suda Masaki, Satoh Takeru, Yamada Ryosuke, Taiga, Suga Kenta, Kamiki Ryunosuke, Yoshizawa Ryo, and Yamazaki Kento. I’d love to add Fukushi Sota, but while he’s ‘hot’, I don’t think his acting has improved at all, unlike Yamada who is doing a few acting milestones of his own.

But why special attention with these guys?

Aside from capturing the imagination of movie fans and critics, they have the charisma to be a level above their peers. Their roles in movies and doramas are not necessarily the main role, but they dive into these characters and made it their own. Most of them have some box office clout, but more importantly, a select list of their movies make sense. These movies have a purpose and people are moved. Their movies are meant to be cinematic experiences but are also fun. (Of course, not everyone likes serious, thought-provoking films, people like to laugh and feel romantic too!). These actors possess a bit of everything and they have exciting future projects people are looking forward to.

Let’s start with Oryo [that’s how his fans call Yoshizawa Ryo, right?]

Japan’s Best Actors – The Hottest List [Top 15; 2016 Edition]

During our first rankings, it was Satoshi Tsumabuki who ruled! Aside from winning Best Actor at the Japan Academy for Villain, Tsumabuki dominated the casting buzz – with back to back roles, including lead roles for My Back Page (with Kenichi Matsuyama), Smuggler and Fly With the Gold. A year later, it was Ryuhei Matsuda’s turn  – he also won Best Actor and had a string of amazing films. On our third year, it was Shota Sometani who dominated the rankings.

Sometani went on to top the rankings 2 years in a row, with Yuya Yagira closing in at 2nd place… This year is very different!

A Tale of Two Best Young Actors – Kamiki Ryunosuke’s Highlight Scene in Kogure Photostudio [video clip]

If Shota Sometani’s career highlight is his portrayal of Sumida in Sion Sono’s Himizu, then Kamiki Ryunosuke matches him step by step in the final episode of Kogure Photostudio. It maybe just a drama, but the quality of acting Ryunosuke produced is nothing short of extraordinary.

Of course Himizu is on a completely different level, and it would not be fair to compare actors, but we’re here to celebrate the best from both Shota and Kamiki and having to choose which dramatic scenes would be their career highlights.

A Tale of Two Best Young Actors – Kamiki Ryunosuke’s Acting Career (so far…)

Kamiki Ryunosuke has been described by many as a genius young actor, who at the age of 13, have won the Rookie of the Year award at the Japan Academy Prize.

Says a fan:

If you enjoy his more recent work, I suggest you watch his older drama Aikurushii. He is a genius kid actor! Plus the series itself is a rare pearl, full of love and wisdom. Very precious to me! Other than that, I love his acting in SPEC, Tantei Gakuen Q, and Kogure Shashinkan.

This comment is a great suggestion from someone who apparently knows the young actor.

A Tale of Two Best Young Actors – Shota Sometani & Ryunosuke Kamiki – Part 1

It seems we need to make separate posts for two of our perennial favorites – Sometani Shota and Kamiki Ryunosuke. Someone asked me a few times already how we compare to top sites like AsianWiki and Nippon Cinema among others – well, we don’t feature everyone, and we have strong opinions about the talents we regularly write about. We are not a database, and we often cut and paste from many sites, but we also listen to what our viewers have to say. And we love to critique movies and dramas!

Back to Shota and Ryunosuke.
